Campaign details

Circumstances of Injury:

While retreating from their position and evacuating wounded comrades, the group was ambushed by drones equipped with explosive drops. Despite already suffering from a concussion and minor injuries, I continued the operation. During the retreat, shrapnel struck my heel, leaving me severely injured. I managed to apply a tourniquet on my own and crawled to seek shelter under a tree. Once the drone strikes ceased, I found a better hiding spot. By morning, our group reached us, and we were evacuated to safety.

Diagnosis:

  • Gunshot and Shrapnel Fracture of the Right Foot:
    • The injury resulted in significant destruction of the bone structure in the foot, caused by shrapnel or a bullet.
    • The trauma involved both bone and soft tissues, complicating recovery and increasing the risk of complications.
  • Comminuted Gunshot Fracture of the Right Calcaneus (Heel Bone):
    • The calcaneus (heel bone) is shattered into multiple fragments, disrupting the stability and function of the foot.
    • The calcaneus is the key support for walking and weight-bearing, making this injury critical for mobility.Potential Complications:
      • Damage to surrounding blood vessels, nerves, and muscles.
      • Risk of infection due to the open nature of the wound.
      • Deformity of the foot, potentially impacting walking and weight distribution.

Clinical Solution:

Subtalar Arthrodesis (Calcaneotalar Joint Fusion):

  1. What is Arthrodesis?
    • A surgical procedure that creates a stable, immobile connection between the calcaneus (heel bone) and the talus (ankle bone).
  2. Purpose:
    • To restore the stability of the foot.
    • To eliminate chronic pain caused by the damaged subtalar joint.
    • To improve weight-bearing and walking function.
  3. Indications for Arthrodesis:
    • Chronic pain in the subtalar joint due to severe trauma.
    • Gunshot or explosive fractures with extensive damage to the bones.
    • Post-traumatic arthritis in the joint.
    • Instability or deformity of the foot that cannot be treated conservatively.
  4. Benefits:
    • Restores the structural integrity of the foot.
    • Improves walking ability and overall quality of life.
    • Prevents further complications, such as joint degeneration or deformity.
