Campaign details

Circumstances of Injury:

During a combat deployment, Oleksandr and his unit came under enemy mortar fire. Amid the explosions, Oleksandr sustained a right knee injury. Despite severe pain that made every step agonizing, he managed to reach safety with the help of his comrades.

Diagnosis:

  1. Post-Traumatic Damage to the Posterior Horn of the Medial Meniscus (Stoller Grade 3):
    • Stoller Grade 3 indicates:
      • A significant tear that extends to the surface of the meniscus.
      • Mechanical instability within the knee joint.
      • The posterior horn of the medial meniscus is particularly vulnerable to overload or trauma.
  2. Right-Sided Gonarthrosis, Grade I:
    • Early-stage degenerative joint disease characterized by:
      • Reduced elasticity of the cartilage.
      • Initial structural changes in the joint surface.
      • Potential onset of joint space narrowing visible in imaging.
  3. Chronic Pain Syndrome:
    • Persistent pain due to structural damage within the joint.
  4. Functional Impairment in Support and Gait:
    • Difficulty with weight-bearing and mobility due to pain, instability, and restricted movement.

Clinical Decision:

Arthroscopic Meniscectomy of the Right Knee Joint.

Arthroscopic Meniscectomy:

Overview:

  • A minimally invasive surgical procedure performed using an arthroscope (a thin, flexible camera) inserted through small incisions.
  • Aimed at preserving as much of the meniscus as possible while removing or repairing the damaged portions.

Indications:

  • Tear of the posterior horn of the medial meniscus (Stoller Grade 3).
  • Mechanical symptoms such as joint locking or difficulty fully extending or flexing the knee.
  • Chronic pain and functional impairment unresponsive to conservative treatments.

Benefits:

  1. Pain Relief:
    • Reduces the persistent pain caused by the torn meniscus.
  2. Restoration of Mobility:
    • Eliminates mechanical restrictions, improving knee joint movement.
  3. Preservation of Joint Health:
    • Minimizes further damage to the joint cartilage and delays the progression of gonarthrosis.
  4. Short Recovery Time:
    • Compared to open surgery, this procedure allows for a quicker return to physical activity and rehabilitation.
