Campaign details
Circumstances of Injury:
From June 1 to June 3, 2024, Valentyn was stationed at a position under heavy combat. On the morning of June 3, enemy mortars opened fire on his unit. One of the shells exploded right next to Valentyn, and his life was saved only by his body armor, which absorbed most of the impact.
However, the shrapnel left its mark. Valentyn sustained a comminuted fracture of the scapula with displaced fragments. Despite the severe injury, he remained conscious and endured five agonizing hours of pain and shock. Summoning all his strength, he managed to reach the evacuation point on his own.
Diagnosis:
- Comminuted fracture of the scapula:
- Multiple bone fragments, potentially involving the glenoid cavity (the joint surface of the shoulder blade).
- Risk of instability in the shoulder joint and long-term functional limitations in the shoulder girdle.
Clinical Solution:
Surgical Fixation (Osteosynthesis) of the Scapula:
- Goal:
- Restore the anatomical structure of the scapula.
- Stabilize the shoulder joint to preserve mobility and strength.
- Procedure:
- Repositioning of bone fragments to their correct anatomical alignment.
- Fixation using specialized implants:
- Plates and screws for precise stabilization.
- Wire constructs for additional reinforcement in complex fractures.
