CAMPAIGN DETAILS

Circumstances of Injury:

I was wounded on May 28, 2025, in the village of Plishchiivka in the Donetsk region while performing a combat mission.
That day, our position was under exceptionally heavy fire. When the shelling temporarily eased, I stepped out of the basement to assess the situation and check whether our equipment—including the MK-19 automatic grenade launcher—had survived. Just as I climbed up, we were hit by a tank round.

The blast wave threw me against a wall, causing a through-and-through wound to my right arm. Despite the intense pain and disorientation, I managed to make my way back into the basement. My brothers-in-arms immediately provided first aid—applying a tourniquet and, following precise instructions from a medic who was guiding us over the radio, packed the wound.

The fear of losing my arm was very real— the injury was severe, and I could see exposed bone and tendons. But thanks to the coordinated actions of the guys and timely medical help, my condition was stabilized.

Diagnosis:

Multiple blast injury (28.05.2025). Gunshot shrapnel wound of the lower third of the right forearm with a comminuted gunshot fracture of the lower third of the diaphysis of the right radius accompanied by bone tissue loss. Post-traumatic neuropathy of the radial, median, and ulnar nerves. Acoustic blast injury. Unilateral sensorineural hearing loss.

Multiple blast injury (28.05.2025) — trauma caused by the impact of an explosion.

Gunshot shrapnel wound of the lower third of the right forearm — a penetrating injury caused by fragments that entered the lower part of the forearm.

A comminuted gunshot fracture of the lower third of the diaphysis of the right radius with bone tissue loss means that the radius was shattered by shrapnel, the bone fragments were displaced, and part of the bone is missing. This makes the injury severe and requires complex reconstruction.

Post-traumatic neuropathy of the radial, median, and ulnar nerves — the three major nerves of the arm were damaged by the injury. This can cause weakness, loss of movement in the hand and fingers, numbness, or decreased sensitivity.

Acoustic blast injury — damage caused by the shock wave of the explosion, affecting the auditory system.

Unilateral sensorineural hearing loss — partial or complete hearing loss in one ear due to damage to the auditory nerve or inner ear.

Clinical Decision:

Surgical intervention: open reduction and internal fixation (ORIF) of the fracture with bone alloplasty.

Open reduction — the surgeon makes an incision to access the fracture site and manually aligns the bone fragments into their correct anatomical position.

Internal fixation (ORIF) — the fracture is stabilized using metal plates, screws, or other fixation devices to keep the bone fragments from shifting and ensure proper healing.

Bone alloplasty — the bone defect is filled with donor bone or synthetic graft material in cases where part of the bone tissue was lost due to the injury. This restores the structural integrity and strength of the bone.

The surgery was performed on September 9, 2025.
