Circumstances of the injury

May 8, 2025, while on position on the Sumy direction, he was injured in his right arm during a mortar shelling.

Despite being in shock, he managed to reach evacuation on his own. Initially, it seemed the arm was lost due to severe pain and numbness. When his fingers began to move, hope appeared — the limb could be saved.

Diagnosis

Comminuted consolidating fractures of the right humerus and right radius and ulna with displacement, stabilized with an external fixation device (EFD).

• Multiple bones in the right arm were broken;
• Fractures were comminuted — bones broke into several fragments:
  • Humerus — lower part near the elbow;
  • Radius and ulna — upper part of the forearm near the elbow joint;
• Bone fragments were displaced from their normal positions;
• “Consolidating” means the fractures have started to heal but are not fully fused;
• An external fixation device (EFD) was applied — a metal frame outside the arm to hold the bones in the correct position while they heal.

Clinical solution

Right elbow joint replacement — surgical treatment in which the damaged or destroyed elbow joint is partially or completely replaced with an artificial implant.

Key points of the procedure:

• The elbow joint was severely damaged and could not function properly;
• During surgery, the damaged parts of the bones and joint were removed;
• An artificial joint was implanted to restore arm mobility;
• The operation aims to reduce pain, restore the ability to bend and straighten the arm, and improve quality of life.
