The Day Everything Changed

December 7, 2024. A day forever etched into my memory. The firefight was intense—nonstop enemy fire, deafening explosions, cries from my fellow soldiers. It all blended into a single roar that drowned out everything else.

Then, out of nowhere, a powerful impact. At first, I didn’t even realize I’d been hit. But when I tried to move my arm, a searing pain shot through my entire body. The blast had done serious damage—shrapnel tore through my right shoulder, shattered my upper arm, and left another wound in my forearm. My arm just hung there, lifeless. The pain was unbearable, but I knew I couldn’t give up. I had to survive. I had to keep fighting.

Thanks to our medics, I made it through that day. But the road ahead is long—a series of surgeries and recovery. Still, I’m determined to heal and get back to where I belong.

The Diagnosis

Gunshot fracture of the upper third of the left humerus with bone loss.
Here’s what that means:

  • Gunshot fracture – A bone shattered by a high-impact projectile. These injuries are complex and extremely dangerous due to the explosive force involved.

  • Upper third of the left humerus – The break is close to the shoulder, making it even harder to restore full arm movement.

  • Bone loss – A section of the bone is gone. This isn’t just a typical fracture that can be set and cast—it requires surgical reconstruction.

To regain use of my arm, I need a specialized two-stage surgery and a long, focused rehabilitation. Timely treatment is my only chance to return to a normal life—and hopefully, my duty.

The Medical Plan: Two Critical Surgeries

1. Implantation of a Cement Spacer

What is it?
A temporary implant made from medical-grade cement. Surgeons place it in the injured area to maintain the joint’s shape and provide structural support.

Why is it necessary?
It prevents deformity, supports surrounding tissues, and helps control any potential infection. Most importantly, it prepares the site for the second, permanent surgery.

How does it work?
After carefully cleaning the damaged area, surgeons insert the spacer to temporarily restore joint function and preserve alignment.

2. Joint Replacement Surgery (Endoprosthesis)

What is it?
Once the area is stable, the spacer is replaced with a permanent, high-quality artificial joint that mimics the movement of a real one.

Why is it necessary?
This procedure relieves pain, restores mobility, and gives me a real chance to return to daily life with full arm function.

How is it done?
After a period of recovery, surgeons remove the spacer and implant the permanent joint, offering long-term stability and movement.
