Circumstances of Injury:

Yuriy, a Ukrainian warrior and defender, was stationed during a combat mission when the enemy launched a mortar attack. The shrapnel caused severe injuries, including blind shrapnel wounds, fractures of three ribs, and an open fracture of both bones in his left lower leg. Compounding these injuries, Yuriy also suffered general hypothermia and frostbite on his feet after prolonged exposure to cold.

Diagnosis:

• Blast Injury (19.02.2024).
• Multiple gunshot and shrapnel wounds (MGSWs) to the right shoulder, both forearms, both thighs, and the left lower leg.
• Closed oblique fracture of the left femur (lower third) with displacement.
• Post-traumatic neuropathy of the common peroneal nerves, with left foot drop.   Injury Details:

  Blast Injury:

  • Damage caused by the combined effects of the blast wave and shrapnel, leading to complex injuries involving soft tissues, bones, nerves, and blood vessels.

  Multiple Gunshot and Shrapnel Wounds (MGSWs):

  • Varying severity, with damage to both soft and bone tissues in the listed areas.

  Closed Oblique Fracture of the Left Femur:

  • Fracture with displaced bone fragments, disrupting the anatomical alignment and function of the leg.

  Post-Traumatic Neuropathy of the Common Peroneal Nerves:

  • Nerve damage causing sensory and motor deficits, particularly foot drop (weakness or inability to lift the foot).
