Circumstances of the Injury:
On October 13, 2023, Vitaliy was stationed in a trench during a mortar attack. One of the shells hit directly into the trench where he was located, causing severe shrapnel injuries. Both legs below the knee, the right thigh, and his hand were affected.
Despite excruciating pain, Vitaliy remained conscious. Understanding the gravity of the situation, he applied a tourniquet to one leg while a comrade assisted with the other. Their swift actions controlled the situation and ensured Vitaliy’s survival until an evacuation team arrived to provide emergency care and transport him to safety.
Diagnosis:
- Multiple soft tissue injuries of the right hand and thigh.
- Gunshot injuries with:
- Closed comminuted fractures of the mid-shaft of both bones of the right lower leg, fixed with external fixation (AZF) since 13.10.2023, with foreign bodies present.
- Perforating gunshot wound of the left tibia with foreign bodies.
- Gunshot fractures of the 2nd and 3rd metatarsals of the left foot with displacement, containing foreign bodies.
- Gunshot fracture of the 1st metatarsal and talus of the right foot with foreign bodies.
- Post-surgical status following primary wound debridement of both lower extremities and the right upper extremity on 13.10.2023.
- Functional impairment of both lower extremities.Injury Details:

- Temporary stabilization of the fractures in the right lower leg, enabling further treatment.

- Limited mobility and functionality in both lower limbs due to the severity of the injuries and initial treatment.
