Injury Circumstances:

Vasyl volunteered in 2014 and has been bravely defending Ukraine ever since. During battles in the Avdiivka direction, he came under attack from an enemy FPV drone. While conducting nighttime reconnaissance and setting up positions, Vasyl spotted the drone and tried to shoot it down. However, during the drone’s second approach, an explosion caused him severe injuries.

The evacuation took six long hours, a true test of endurance. Vasyl feared for his life, understanding the risks, but his inner strength helped him persevere.

Diagnosis:

Open comminuted fracture of the left tibia with fragment displacement.

Gunshot wound to the left lower leg with an open comminuted fracture of the tibia and displaced fragments. The left lower leg was severely damaged by gunfire, resulting in the tibia breaking into multiple pieces and losing its normal alignment. The injury is accompanied by an open wound, increasing the risk of infection, and requires surgical intervention to clean the wound, fix the bone fragments with metal constructs, prevent infection, and restore leg function.

Clinical Decision:

Open reduction and biological osteosynthesis (BIOS) of the tibia.

During surgery, the fragments of the tibia will be surgically aligned (reduction) to ensure proper healing. A method called biological osteosynthesis (BIOS) will then be used, involving special fixation constructs that minimize tissue damage and support natural healing. This approach ensures stable fixation of the fragments while preserving the bone’s blood supply, promoting faster and better recovery.
