Circumstances of Injury:

While advancing to a combat position, Taras and his comrades came under mortar fire. Shrapnel fragments caused severe injuries, particularly to his leg and shoulder. In the chaos, Taras mustered his strength and managed to reach a safe location on his own. Once there, he applied a tourniquet to control the bleeding.

Diagnosis:

Consolidated comminuted fracture of the proximal metaphysis-epiphysis of the left humerus. Post-traumatic deforming osteoarthritis of the left shoulder joint.

This means that the fracture in the upper part of the humerus has healed over time, but the trauma has caused degenerative changes in the joint. These changes lead to joint deformation, pain, restricted movement, and require treatment to restore arm function.

Placement of an Articulating Spacer:

The spacer provides minimal mobility and stability to the joint while preventing complications such as infection or further joint dysfunction.
